Competences

Competence can be defined as a conglomerate of knowledge, abilities/skills, motives and emotional dispositions that develops over the course of one’s life and is used to cope with situations of action in private, professional or social situations. It determines how action situations are shaped and how one assesses one’s own possibilities for action. Competence thus forms the basis for a person’s actions and only becomes visible and comprehensible in a concrete action situation (Kaufhold/ Barthel (2017) LERNSTÜCK© – Ein Verfahren zur Zertifizierung informell erworbener Kompetenzen auf der Basis dokumentierter Arbeitsprozesse, In: Erpenbeck u.a. Handbuch Kompetenzmessung, 3.Auflage, Schäffer-Peoschel Verlag, Stuttgart, translated into English by the author).
